Nach "Touching the Void" ein weiteres tolles Buch von Joe Simpson. Ehrlich und offen beleuchtet er die Aspekte der Faszination Bergsteigen und des damit verbundenen Risikos. Was treibt uns an, warum riskiert man sein Leben wieder besseren Wissens, aber letztlich auch was macht uns aus? Ein wirklich lesenswertes Buch, spannend geschrieben mit passenden Fotografien. Zwar ist die Eigerwand und ihre Geschichte ein zentraler Punkt des Buches, aber es ist weit mehr als ein Abriß der faszinierenden und tragischen Historie der legendären Nordwand. Wem "Touching the Void" gefallen und wer Harrers " Die Weiße Spinne" gelesen hat findet hier ein weiteres klasse Buch, absolut empfehlenswert!
Joe Simpson beschreibt in "The Beckoning Silence" seinen inneren Kampf um die Entscheidung, mit dem Bergsteigen aufzuhören. Er nimmt sich noch einige schöne "klassische" Routen vor, darunter die Eigernordwand, die in diesem Buch das Hauptziel darstellt. Dabei spielen immer wieder die Zweifel, die gefährliche Route zu gehen, und natürlich die tragische Geschichte des Berges eine große Rolle.Besonders spannend wird es dann, als Joe und sein Kumpel im unteren Bereich der Eigernordwand von einem Sturm überrascht werden...Das Buch ist wirklich top, empfehlenswert vor allem für diejenigen, die bereits "Touching the Void" und "This Game of Ghosts" gelesen haben.
