Ich liebe David Sedaris. Du lachst dich schlapp! Wer kann, sollte es unbeding i.d. Originalsprache lesen, da die Art, wie der Autor mit dem Sprachwitz umgeht, i.d. (deutschen) Übersetzung doch nicht so glänzen kann. Ich habe fast alles von Sedaris gelesen und würde alle Bücher empfehlen, dies besonders. Einfach hinreißend, wie er sich selbst immer wieder in die Bresche schmeißt, sich entblößt und (stellvertretend für uns alle) schonungslos und unglaublich lustig auf die Unzulänglichkeiten unseres verrückten Lebens hinweist. Dabei tut er (wie in fast allen seinen Büchern) eigentlich nix anderes, als zu beobachten, oder reale Situationen zu beschreiben. Saukomisch!

I had so much expectation from this book! I expected a book that made me laugh, but it never happened! I can't understand why peole claim that this book is funny! It is completely flat and boring! So, if you are looking for a funny book, please do not choose this one!

Great opening chapter to what is an awesome story all the way to the end. This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. The odd characters made it all the more funny. Being the first Sedaris book I have read, I am up and ready for more of his stories. He is a witty and humorous writer and reminds me of the funny book The Usurper and Other Stories.The story flows smoothly, backed by a rich choice of words, deep knowledge and excellent descriptions. I am glad I read this book.

This is the first book by David Sedaris that I have read and, for the most part, it was very funny. During certain portions (I am ashamed to include one short scatological piece among them) I was laughing out loud. Others were very funny in a more "dry" sense.The first portion of the book is Sedaris' autobiography of growing up in a quirky family, dealing with a not-too-successful speech therapist, and working (?) as an artist and in other trades. Next, he describes his stays in France at his friend's house in the country and in Paris. Anyone who has spent time in France, and struggled with the French language, will be able to relate to the humourous situations.This is definitely a good book if you need some chuckles and some loud laughs!

What can I say about this author's new book that hasn't been said already? It's a wonderful and wickedly funny book. David really knows how to write and is probably the funniest author around today. The first part of the book begins with his North Carolina childhood and the second half moves to Paris. What a wonderful collection of essays. I especially enjoyed "Today's Special" and "You Can't Kill the Rooster." But really all of the essays are so funny, and true to life. To be able to put these everyday events into words that are simple yet so funny, is truly a gift.Believe it or not I haven't read his previous book "Naked", but now its being pulled off my library shelf to be read immediately. When you start to read "Me Talk Pretty One Day" you will want to sit and read it right through, forget about dinner and everything else. This book deserves more than 5 stars. David, we await your next collection with eagerness.

Anja Kiel, geboren 1973, wollte als Kind immer Malerin oder Tänzerin werden. Zum Entspannen macht sie Yoga oder besucht Museen. The book has a nice reading font. It's not too big, neither too small,the fact that there is only one column on each page makes it much easierfinding the words explained at the bottom of every page.The additional lexicon at the back of the book is very useful tooand even though it is lacking some features that the Riverside Chaucerhas, it definitely is a good version, since it is easier to read for beginners of Medieval EnglishLiterature.

If I'd checked the reviews I'd have seen that this is a translation. I didn't, so this version is rather useless for me. The quality of the print etc seems to be good as ever though, and the size is nice.

The translation is quite sufficient, and it is a nice addition to my vatious editions of the Canterbuty Tales. At the price it is super in e-book form and every student of Middle English should enjoy it.Range

The Canterbury Tales sind einfach ein Klassiker der englischen Mittelalterliteratur: lustig, lehrreich, innovativ. Diese Geschichten eignen sich gut für alle, die am englischen Mittelalter interessiert sind, da sie ein wunderbares Bild der damaligen Geschellschaft, Sitten und Kultur zeichnen.

-Da es hier wohl mehr um die Ausgabe geht, als um den Inhalt, muss man sagen, dass die Penguin Books Edition leider nicht sehr überzeugend ist. Leider ist das Papier (wie so oft bei englischen Büchern) sehr billig und selbst der Schutzumschlag aus sehr weichem Karton. There is an excellent introduction by John Wain and an apposite foreword by Melvyn Bragg while the text is Chaucer but with old English given an understandable and very readable translation by the great Chaucer authority, Nevill Coghill.This particular volume is not a text for university study but is a volume for pleasurable and bedtime reading. It returns me to the humour and the wisdom of Chaucer and reminds me that there are so many English expressions from Chaucer which we still use today - for example, keeping mum, or many a true word said in jest, or rotten apples spoiling all in the barrel. We are reminded of the richness of the English language, the debt we owe to Chaucer and the freshness of these 14th century tales.This particular edition is worth acquiring ( readily available) and adding to one's book treasures. It is a very beautiful book. The illustrations are well matched to the text and repay close study. If you have never read Chaucer or if you read Chaucer as a chore, take another look and give yourself the treat of a classic of literature in a lovely format

In the Canterbury Tales Chaucer tells the story of a pilgrimate to Canterbury where the pilgrims, in order to pass the time during their long walk, tell each other various stories. The party consists of such different characters as a knight, a miller, a prioress, a merchant etc. and each of them has a slightly different way of storytelling.Thanks to PenguinŽs superb footnotes that not only explain lots of medieval English words and their meaning but also give a detailed survey of the conventions of the Middle Ages, the English is surprisingly easy to understand and suddenly the Middle Ages donŽt seem to be such a faraway era anymore. I am not a native speaker, so I cheated a little and got myself the German translation of the Canterbury Tales as well and read them in turns, otherwise I am afraid I might have missed some important points... I found it quite an exhausting read, but at the same time I enjoyed it immensely!
